What is so special about a bird anyway? Many are cute, some are ravishing, others just bizarrely beautiful. And humans have always been so enchanted with the power of flight in every culture that even an elephant flies in Hindu legend. Airavata sucks up water from the paatal lok and sprays it into the clouds so that it may rain. In Persian heritage, a gigantic bird woman, Simurgh, who embodies the wisdom of all ages, similarly mediates between the earthly and the heavenly.  Not to mention Superman. And can planes be far behind then. 

 

But it’s not just their wings that let our imagination take flight. Their varied personalities allow us to glean pride, elegance, playfulness, cooperation, endurance, adaptability, melody, but they can also quibble noisily and practice subterfuge. They appear in our proverbs and parables to remind us of the necessity of resourcefulness and the advisability of keeping calm and carrying on. And let’s come back to the point that they are gorgeous. Whether they can fly or not. Whether they are female or the more colourful sex. And there is no dearth of colours. 

 

These colours, both literal and allegorical, inspire us to create prints that can keep the cycle of inspiration alive in our efforts to learn about, improve and conserve our world, and ourselves in the process.
